Tunisia’s Ministry of Communications, Technology and Transport, along with the Tunisian Airport Authority (OACA), awarded the tender to TAV in a BOT basis for 40 years. The BOT tender, a 40-year concession, also includes the operation of the existing nearby Monastir Airport, about 60 km away, thereby eliminating any unnecessary competition between the two facilities.
TAV Construction was responsible for the construction of the terminal building, aprons, runways, taxiways and a car park. The project also comprises the construction of 90 meters high ATC tower. Designed for a terminal capacity of 7 million passengers per year, total terminal area is over 90,000 m². With future expansions, terminal capacity is planned to reach 22 million passengers per year in 40 years.
As being a Greenfield project situated approximately 80 km south of the capital city Tunis, the new airport is an architectural and aesthetic wonder, boasting of the latest technology and first class facilities and services, both for passengers and the airlines themselves.
